Ideal Weight Calculator

"Ideal body weight" formulas such as Devine (1974), Robinson (1983) and Miller (1983) were originally developed for calculating medication doses and are still widely used as reference points. Because each formula weights height differently, this tool shows all three side by side, together with a more practical benchmark: the weight range corresponding to a healthy BMI of 18.5–24.9 for your height. A healthy weight is a range, not a single number; this tool is for information only and is not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions

Why do the formulas give different numbers?

Each formula was fitted to different reference data and assigns a different weight increment per inch of height above 5 feet (152.4 cm). Devine adds 2.3 kg per inch, Robinson 1.9/1.7 kg and Miller 1.41/1.36 kg for men/women, so results diverge as height increases.

Which ideal weight formula should I use?

The Devine formula is the most widely cited and is still used for drug dosing. For general health purposes, however, the healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) shown below the result is a more meaningful target than any single-number formula.

Do these formulas account for muscle mass or age?

No. They use only height and sex, so a muscular person can be "above" their formula weight while being perfectly healthy. Body composition, waist circumference and overall fitness say far more than a single ideal-weight number.
